2006 Charity Golf Day
(posted 19 Nov 2006) See photographs
The very successful 4th Annual Rous Lench Charity Golf Day was held at Bidford Grange championship golf course on the 12th of October, raising in excess of £1200 in generous support of the refurbishment of our Village Hall.
A total of 47 courageous people distributed across 12 teams bet against the weatherman's predictions and proved once again that golf is mostly about luck as the day's weather was perfect from start to finish. Many of the teams' scores were also quite good! Winston Churchill once said, "Golf is a game who's aim it is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole with weapons singularly ill-designed for the purpose." Fortunately, this arguably true observation did not discourage our players from trying their best and producing mostly impressive results.
For the golfers, the day began at 8:30am with a traditional "bacon butty" and coffee prior to teeing off from 9:30am in teams of 4 for a round of 9 holes before lunch. Lunch was a tasty ploughman's washed down in most cases by a nice pint of lager or ale. Following lunch, the teams set off to do an 18-hole Texas Scramble competition. This really brought out the team spirit and camaraderie in everyone. The last teams wandered back into the clubhouse just as a glorious sunset was lighting up the sky. What a beautiful finish to a great day of golf!
The bar staff were kept busy serving refreshments before dinner while the golfers shared tales of holes "just missed", "bad luck" shots, and daring-do on the carts (Andy!). A delicious roast dinner was served just after 7:00pm, followed by a very good natured trip by everyone back to the bar area where further refreshment was served, raffle tickets were drawn, and the day's prize winners announced.
The winners of this year's 18 hole tournament were "John Marston & Co" with a very impressive score of 48 points. Congratulations to Ian Morgan, Mark Morgan, Simon Harbridge and Keith Cadman.
Following in second place on the 18 holes were the "Voicepath Velocities" with a score of 45 points. Congratulations to Richard Bate, David Blower, Barry Wilkinson and Michael Latham.
The winners of the morning's 9 hole competition were the "Highfield Bandits" with a score of 33 points. Congratulations to Rob Hartley, Jason Lishman, Chris Holmes and Paul Hall-Annison.
Following in second place on the 9 holes were "Norfolk & Chance" with a score of 30 points.
Congratulations to Neil Campbell, Keith Knox, Steve Smith and Darren Wilson.
The winners of the longest drive competition at the 3rd hold were Simon Harbridge (AM) and Jason Lishman (PM), and winners of the "nearest to the pin" competition at the 7th hold were Jason Lishman (AM) and Keith Knox (PM). Congratulations to all three.
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's event. Special thanks to Brian Herdman, Fran Herdman, Andy Langman, Anita Perry and Darin McLean for their help in organising the event in record time this year. We will aim to have next year's tournament in the Summer months, so if you are a keen golfer or would like to be part of the organising fun, please let someone from the Village Hall Committee know so that you don't miss out.
See you next year!

Charity Auction raises £4133
(posted 14 Nov 2004)
A huge thank you to everyone who kindly donated items or promises, and all who came on the night (or sent sealed bids) to make the event such an amazing success. Thanks also to our auctioneer Phil Badger who, in his own inimitable style, managed to get through 97 lots selling all but one! There were some tense moments though... Paula & Alan Williamson's promise of a homemade curry for four "delivered to your door" looked like being won by a visitor from Holland! And you should have seen the faces of youngsters Charlotte & Alexander Jarman, who had kindly offered to "look after your animals for a week", but didn't count on local farmer Phil Curnock placing a bid - baaaa!
The auction night proved to be great fun and raised a fantastic sum towards the restoration of the village hall. Please click here to view a complete listing of the auction lots and their final prices.
Note: in order to view the auction results you must have the Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you do not have this software installed you may download it free of charge by clicking on the button below and following the simple instructions.

Even faster broadband is here.
(posted 19 Sep 2004)
BT have recently found a way to deliver an even faster broadband service which works even for those of us "out in the sticks". When broadband was first announced, it was thought the households in Rous Lench may be to far away from the Inkberrow exchange to benefit from the service since the signal degrades the further away you are from the exchange. However, 512kbps speed broadband does indeed reach the centre of Rous Lench.
In the past few days BT and other Internet Service Providers have been offering 1Mbps broadband, that's twice as fast as 512kbps and 20 times as fast as old fashioned dial-up modem internet. The good news is that the service is little or no more expensive than the 512kbps speed. Even better, the service DOES actually work in Rous Lench and Radford.

Rous Lench and Radford run a NHW scheme. Your co-ordinators are Pat Baldrey (792914), Zoë Durrant, Doris Gisbourne (792079) and Diane Wicks. We receive telephone messages from the police about crime in our area so that we can pass on relevant information to residents. To ensure we target areas that are important to us as a rural community please pass any concerns or ideas to Pat Baldrey.
It is important that your local NHW scheme remains active if you wish to maintain your discount status with insurers. If insurers find a local scheme is inactive they can refuse to settle a claim, so your support is needed and appreciated.
Our beat officer is John Watts. Hopefully some of you met him at the Pig Roast. John can be contacted at Pershore Police Station on 08457 444888 x3631.
A committee was set up in February made up of NHW co-ordinators from Evesham and Pershore and their outlying districts. The committee meets quarterly and pools information and ideas with similar committees around the region and passes this information on to co-ordinators at grass roots. Rous Lench and Radford are represented on the E&P committee, so we have someone to voice concerns about local issues.
The E&P committee talks with the police and other local bodies and helps local NHW groups to access funding. They have obtained a grant from Evesham Town Council to help fund local projects and have also been donated NHW signage so we can have free NHW signs to replace those that were stolen.
The fire service has approached us as they would like to introduce people to their scheme to receive a home fire safety check. The fire safety checks include the provision and fitting of free smoke detectors and leaflets on fire safety. The fire service will give a brief presentation on their scheme. Details will be posted in the Messenger.
Contact details will be kept up to date on the Local Organisations page.

Broadband is here, and it works!
(posted 11 Aug 2004)
After a very long local campaign, BT delivered on its promise to upgrade our telephone exchange in Inkberrow on 7th July 2004 to provide broadband or ADSL. We are very pleased to report that, despite the fact that Rous Lench especially is quite a long way from the exchange, at least 2 households in Rous Lench have broadband up and running successfully. This means that Radford and the majority of Rous Lench is now in the fast lane of the "information superhighway"! We can all enjoy fast internet access and be free to make telephone calls at the same time. It only goes to show that all good things come to those who wait!

Golf Day 2004 raises over £4000!
(posted 11 Aug 2004)
Following on from the success of last September's inaugural Charity Golf Day, this year's event on May 19th succeeded in raising a further £4000 for the Village Hall Disabled Access Project.
The 2004 Golf day built on the success of the previous year by raising over £4,000 through the most generous sponsorship of the competitors' friends and families. A glorious day gave a wonderful setting to the challenging International course at The Vale Golf Club, Evesham.
The winners were the "Shy Talkers", captained by Simon Beckett, who came in with a combined score of 106.
Best individual score was Brian Herdman with 36
Best aggregate Par 3 scorer was Steve Francis with 10 points
Best aggregate par 5 scorers were Simon Smith and Craig Green with 13 points
Nearest the pin was won by Neil Curnock
Longest drive was won by Rob Pinder
Wooden Spoon was claimed by the AT&T Finance Reprobates with a combined score of 54
Thank you to everyone who took part and to all of those who helped and supported through sponsorship.

Broadband in Rous Lench & Radford
(posted 22 Feb 2004)
As a rural community we are not exactly first in line to be given access to the latest in technological innovation. British Telecom have upgraded exchanges serving 85% of the UK population to deliver high speed internet access, also known as "Broadband" or "ADSL". BT implemented a system which required households and businesses to register an interest in Broadband so that they could prioritise their work in upgrading telephone exchanges to the new technology. After a local campaign, our exchange in Inkberrow reached the level of 300 registrations BT required to make the upgrade. We are now awaiting a "Ready For Service" date from BT which should be issued by the end of February. Looking at their current plan, this is not likely to be before June 2004, but we can always hope! As soon as any firm dates are published, we'll let you know! If you are interested in checking, try www.adslguide.org or www.bt.com/broadband.

Charity Golf Day 2003
(posted 8 Oct 2003)
As Ronnie Barker would have reported it "he had a hole in one and a rather interesting crack in the other!"
This old joke holds good for our star performers on the day.
As we set out on our golf day the late summer sun continued to bake the ground hard, cracks were appearing not only in the scorched Vale golf course but also in the game plans of many of our contestants as the effects of a fine lunch and the pressure of competition golf took its toll. Little did we know that, spurred on by his adoring wife, on the 11th hole Brian Herdman achieved the pinnacle of his golfing career by scoring a hole in one. This remarkable achievement inspired Brian into some remarkable golf in the remainder of the round, ending up with a score of 46. Remarks of "fix" and "bandit" were drowned out in the 19th hole as Brian brought the traditional (and mighty costly) round of drinks for everyone.
Compared to such heroics the danger was that the rest of this report would be something of an anticlimax. However, equally as remarkable as Brian's round were the enjoyment of the day by the 8 teams that took part and the funds raised for the disability access project.
Each player had to pay the cost of the lunch, golf and dinner package and commit to raise another £30 in sponsorship towards this worthy cause. Additionally, local businesses such as Hazelwood's Trailers, Dudley's Coaches, Inkberrow Driving Range, Chris Tallis and Martin Fernihough sponsored holes on the course. All of this sponsorship coupled with a sponsorship matching agreement with AT&T and projected income from the Gift Aid scheme raised the total proceeds of the day to over £3,900.
Well done to all involved in organising, sponsoring, supporting and playing on the day and we look forward to organising our 2004 tournament safe in the knowledge that Brian will have his handicap cut significantly!

New Hall designs unveiled at AGM
(posted 12 Mar 2003)
The Village Hall AGM on 3rd March at 7.30pm was quite well attended. After the main AGM agenda plans for the refurbishment were presented. The Village Hall Committee has a challenging year ahead in which funds must be raised for the Jubilee Project to refurbish and improve the hall to meet the requirements of the 2004 Disability Discrimination Act. The success of this project will depend upon the combined efforts of the villagers.

(posted 17 Jan 2003)
Awards For All, the National Lottery small grants body, have awarded a grant of £4500 to finance the feasibilty phase of the Jubilee Project to regenerate the Village Hall. This money will allow us to commission structural surveys and to enlist the help of an architect to draw up a feasibility study.
